Brownsville Independent School District Fine Arts Department presented the 8th Annual Brownsville Estudiantina Championship on November 6, 2013, at the Central Administration Building Auditorium. (CAB). The competition consisted of all six BISD high schools. Pace, Lopez, Porter, Rivera, and Veterans Memorial.
This competition is in honor of Ms. Maria Aurora Arrese she pioneered the Estudiantina program in BISD. Ms. Arrese began the Estudiantina as an after school program at Pace High School while working as a Piano Accompanist for the choral program. Through Ms. Arrese's work with the Fine Arts Administrator Mr. Robert Vezzetti, the Estudiantina program was introduced as a course in the High School curriculum. She would teach Estudiantina a few periods a day at each of the three high schools at that time. In 2013 the BISD Estudiantina program serves over 1,000 students, has eight full time directors and is offered at each of the six high schools. We pay tribute to Ms. Aurora Arrese and her contribution to the lives of countless Brownsville youth.
That evening our Veterans Memorial Estudiantina Centinela, received the two trophies, one for excellence performance and the overall Championship trophy.
